We’re talking about expectations and setting them for NVIDIA’s RTX 3080 and 3090 GPU coolers. We’re addressing viewer questions about CPU & RAM thermals relating to this design.

Correction: NVIDIA’s chart says either it is 10dBA quieter at the same temperature (thermal-normalized) or 20C cooler at the same noise level (noise normalized). Sorry to mix that up, but that’s what we get when we have 6 hours of technical briefings and 24 hours to turn around the content!

This video covers a variety of topics pertaining to NVIDIA’s new RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 Founders Edition coolers and includes new official information from NVIDIA on the cooler performance expectations. NVIDIA provided like-for-like comparisons of the 2080 FE cooler versus the 3080 FE cooler, including acoustic (noise level) and thermal results at a given point along a curve. That’s all in this video. Additionally, we wanted to discuss some common talking points in the community right now. The key word is “discuss,” because until we’ve actually tested the card for real, we can’t fully form an opinion of how it’s designed or how it performs. That said, we can at least talk about some basics, like these topics: RAM thermals and how memory will behave with additional heat from a neighboring exhaust fan, CPU cooler behavior (and air vs. liquid choices for the FE card), and case fan positioning and how, suddenly, some of the standard recommendations may actually change. This all depends on the cooler, the case, and the GPU, so there are a lot of moving parts that make it difficult to standardize and test — but we’ll do our best when the reviews start rolling-out.
