Quantum computers pose a significant threat to our sensitive government and corporate data. With quantum computing becoming a reality, traditional encryption algorithms are no longer good enough. Each technological innovation, regardless of its inventor’s intention, can be used for either good or bad. Considering the immense potential power of quantum computers, it is easy to produce use cases to help humanity, and others that revolve around power, control, and domination. There is no doubt that quantum computers will be used for harm (as well as good).
This is why governments and enterprises have begun considering next-generation quantum resilient cryptography (QRC) to secure against powerful quantum computers. The current encryption we use to secure communications was first deployed in the 1970’s. Key lengths have increased along with compute power, but the cryptographic schemes we currently use are nearly 50 years old. This is why in December of 2022, the US State Department mandated that all US Federal Agencies begin upgrading to QRC.
QRC is necessary to protect sensitive information traveling over standard communications from servers to edge devices, IOT and even satellites. All these devices are protected by standard cybersecurity measures, so ensuring they are secure from malicious quantum attacks is crucial. And data that is stolen today will be decrypted later using quantum computers.
